Newry
.

The officers were en route to respond to a reported hijacking when their vehicle was hit in the Mountain Road region at approximately 9:30 pm.

PSNI
Detective Inspector Jill Angus stated that law enforcement officials were informed about a stolen blue Volkswagen Golf which occurred just prior to 7:20 pm on Tuesday. This incident took place after another black Golf crashed into it within the vicinity of Armagh Road.

A person who was riding in the black car — which featured a license plate indicating it came from somewhere south — got out and attacked the driver of the blue car prior to taking off with their vehicle.

The blue vehicle was subsequently discovered abandoned on Newry’s Chancellors Road.

“A law enforcement car that was part of the search operation for the suspects was traveling on Mountain Road, located south of Newry, when it was hit by a black Golf around 9:30 PM,” stated DI Angus.

The Golf departed from the location and was later discovered burned-out in the Camlough region around 11:15 pm. The police vehicle ended up significantly damaged, with three officers sustaining injuries due to the crash.

An investigation is currently ongoing, and I urge anyone who observed these vehicles traveling through the Newry region on Tuesday evening or witnessed the carjacking incident, as well as those who may have obtained dashboard camera footage that might aid our inquiry, to reach out to the detectives at Ardmore station.
