On Saturday, a heavily loaded truck bearing the registration number GGE 624 YJ lost control and crashed off the Pen Cinema Bridge in Lagos. It landed on two commercial buses stationed below the bridge, resulting in the truck driver being critically injured.

According to a statement released by Adebayo Taofiq, who leads the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck driver sustained serious injuries including multiple fractures in both hands. Emergency services managed to free the driver from the debris and promptly transported them to the General Hospital in Ile-Epo for immediate medical care.

As stated in the LASTMA announcement: “We would like to inform the general public about a significant road traffic accident that took place this morning on Agege’s Old Abeokuta Road. The incident involved a heavily loaded lorry with registration number GGE 624 YJ and two brightly colored commercial Volkswagen buses.”

Initial inquiries indicate that the truck driver, who suffered severe injuries to both hands, lost control of the vehicle when maneuvering over the Pen Cinema Bridge. Consequently, the truck fell off the bridge and landed on top of the two commercial buses positioned underneath.

Members of the LASTMA team responded quickly, managing to free the critically wounded driver and promptly handing him over to personnel from the Elere Police Division. The individual was subsequently taken to the General Hospital in Ile-Ife for emergency care.

To safeguard other individuals using the roads and avoid additional accidents, LASTMA staff promptly secured the crash location by establishing barriers around the zone and rerouting vehicular movement. Following this, agents from the LASEMA Response Team rapidly removed the debris, thereby reinstating unobstructed traffic circulation in the region.

With great concern, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, appealed to all drivers—including truck owners—to be extra careful as the rainy season begins.

He further emphasized the importance of adhering to current road safety protocols and called on drivers to comply with the newly installed speed-limiting devices, which are intended to reduce accidents and enhance overall road safety.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also extended heartfelt wishes for the swift and full recovery of the injured driver.
