WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. — On Monday evening, authorities had to briefly shut down part of Interstate 70 in Wayne County due to a collision.
As reported in a press release by the Indiana Department of Transportation, the accident took place at mile marker 150.8 on the westbound side of Interstate 70 prior to 11:42 PM. The statement provided by INDOT did not detail the cause of the incident or mention whether anyone was hurt as a result.
By midnight Tuesday, INDOT had not indicated the duration for which I-70 was anticipated to remain closed.
INDOT stated that the accident included an overturned semitrailer. They also verified that at least one individual was trapped inside one of the vehicles involved in the collision.
INDOT also mentioned that diesel fuel was released during Monday’s accident; however, the exact quantity remains unknown at this time. It is uncertain whether a hazardous materials response team will be required to support local emergency personnel in managing the situation.
Several significant accidents have taken place on I-70 in Wayne County over the past few months. In February, a motorist lost their life in an incident.
