Rally. It’s nothing but a flashy toy, and definitely not the trim level that will outsell the rest of the Mach-E lineup. But it proves that through the right approach, an EV can in fact become a very desirable machine, even for enthusiasts.

2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally First Impressions: It Looks Like A Life-Sized RC Car

As soon as I saw the Mach-E Rally, memories flooded back from when I used to play with those awesome remote-control cars during my childhood. This model was crafted specifically for rallying enthusiasts among Mach-E drivers. Although I doubt many actual Mach-E owners would engage in amateur rallies with this electric SUV, the concept itself is undeniably thrilling.
I’ll delve into how the Rally version differs mechanically from the other models in the Mach-E series shortly. However, when it comes to aesthetics, this variant boasts strikingly cool fog lights seamlessly incorporated within the car’s plastic front grille. Additionally, it features stylish OZ-inspired white rally wheels and a rear spoiler reminiscent of one found on a Ford Focus RS. These design modifications significantly add character and style to the Mach-E model.

I’m not particularly fond of the vivid Grabber Yellow paint job, but it certainly drew a lot of attention when I owned the car. The racing stripes were perfectly suited for a race-inspired vehicle like this.

Since the Rally version is essentially a trim level within the Mach-E lineup, and, in a way, an extension of the GT model, it’s effectively sold the same way in both the U.S. and Canadian markets, with similar optional packages too. But there are a few distinctions. U.S. cars get two additional paint colors; Molten Magenta and Desert Sand. American-bound Mach-E Rallys also get a choice of black wheel option that you can’t get in Canada.

I participated in the Mach-E Rally towards the end of March when the snow usually begins to melt around Eastern Canada. However, as expected, my country delivered an unexpected early spring blizzard. As a result, instead of finding myself on muddy gravel roads like anticipated, I found myself racing over snow and ice.
My rental car didn’t come equipped with suitable winter tires for the job; instead, it had “winter-rated” Michelin CrossClimate2 all-season tires designed more for mud, sand, and rocks than snow. However, I believed that the Rally’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, identical to the one found in the Mach-E GT, would offer sufficient traction under such circumstances. In terms of the GT version, the Rally inherits its features as well.

As usual, featuring a 91-kWh battery, 480 hp combined power output, and tarmac-shredding 700 lb-ft of torque.
The vehicle’s clearance was increased by an inch, accompanied by adjustments to the bushings, anti-roll bars, and adaptive, magnetorheological shock absorbers. Personally, I favored keeping the Rally in its Unbridled mode, similar to the Sport+ setting found in other cars. Keeping the traction control active seemed more suitable for these circumstances. This configuration enabled me to enjoy impressive powerslides with the Mach-E Rally, all while having a reliable safeguard that prevented me from crashing into a maple tree.
What makes the Rally special is how it genuinely seems like Ford’s designers intended it to be predominantly driven at the rear end, emphasizing oversteer as the dominant characteristic. The chassis offers excellent balance and responsiveness, providing clear input feedback throughout. You can feel a smooth transition when the Mach-E Rally starts to slide, making you eager to experience it repeatedly. However, upon disabling the vehicle’s traction control system completely, I found myself struggling due to uncontrollable wheel spin caused by the dual electric engines on icy surfaces. If equipped with proper winter tires or those fitted with studs, exploring the full potential of an unaided Mach-E Rally would likely yield impressive results. Even so, having these controls enabled didn’t diminish the immense enjoyment derived from piloting the Rally under such conditions.

Clearly, enhancing the performance of an electric vehicle invariably reduces both its range and efficiency. Although the Rally is fundamentally a tweaked version of the GT model, it surprisingly has a shorter range compared to the latter. According to the EPA, the Rally achieves only 265 miles per full charge, marking a decrease of 15 miles when contrasted with the GT’s rating. Under optimal circumstances, Ford claims that DC fast charging can reach up to 150 kW using suitable chargers. For Level 2 AC home charging, the built-in charger boasts a capacity of 11 kW.
I completed all my charging sessions at home using my personal 7.2 kW Flo G5 station, allowing for a complete recharge overnight. Given that I operated the Rally under chilly conditions, even during a snowstorm, my seven-day experience with the vehicle led to an elevated energy consumption rate of around 75 MPGe, equivalent to approximately 202 miles of actual driving distance.

Inside, the Mach-E Rally essentially offers the same sort of dashboard arrangement, storage space and passenger space as the rest of the lineup. And that’s all fine. After all, the Mach-E is a sensible midsize crossover originally designed to carry a family and everything that goes along with it. In that respect, nothing changes.
However, Ford made an effort to include some Rally-inspired features, like the seats, which are not only more tightly bolstered but also equipped with a big white-plastic back panel. This gives it a sleek look reminiscent of a rally car’s interior. The same white plastic can be seen on the steering wheel. Additionally, there is a discreet white accent strip running along the inner part of the door panels.

Overall, the interior of the Mach-E is practical, roomy, and comfy for both the front and back seating areas. During spirited drives, these sports seats provide comfort along with adequate support. Personally, I’m starting to tire of vehicles equipped solely with an oversized tablet-like infotainment system. At least the Mach-E includes a secondary, smaller display functioning as a digital instrument panel; however, overall design elements lack flair. A layout more focused on the driver, similar to what’s seen in the standard Mustang model, would be preferable. Additionally, this particular variant could benefit from enhanced sound insulation. While build quality inside the Mach-E stays high, cheaper plastic materials used in certain parts of the cabin suggest efforts were made to cut costs somewhere.

Although I complain that the Mach-E is all screen and not enough actual dashboard and buttons, I must say, that large tablet infotainment system works rather well. For starters, I appreciate that Ford has left a physical volume knob. But I also like how well this system integrates Android Auto (in my case), while utilizing the screen’s full real estate to project it. The system responds quickly, and everything is easy to find. Ford also puts at your disposal a menu that allows you to see where your energy went, and how you can consume less of it. That’s neat.

Even though the Mach-E has been around for several years, it remains one of the most functional crossover vehicles in its segment. This is due to the presence of both a regular trunk and a front trunk.

There’s ample space inside to accommodate sizable objects, such as a mountain bike, particularly when you flatten the backrests. Compared to models like the Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, or Volkswagen ID.4, this vehicle offers slightly less storage capacity; however, it provides greater interior volume than a Hyundai Ioniq 5.
