McLENNAN COUNTY, Texas (
FOX 44
– A man was saved from his car just moments before it became completely inundated by the escalating floodwaters.
The McLennan County Sheriff’s Department received a call for a water rescue at 323 Battle Lake Road around 12:54 p.m. on Tuesday. The situation involved an individual who was stuck inside their vehicle due to escalating floodwaters inundating their personal driveway.
The person who called reported that water was quickly filling their car and had risen up to the seat height. Dispatch swiftly alerted nearby volunteer fire stations such as those in Mart VFD, Hallsburg VFD, and Elk VFD about this urgent situation. Further units from the Mart Police Department, McLennan County Constable Precinct 1, along with personnel from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) were also dispatched for assistance.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that a police officer from Mart arrived around 12:57 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the vehicle about 100 yards away from the road, situated in a swiftly flowing stream. Early attempts to rescue the individuals inside were hampered by both the robust currents and the car being partly submerged under water.
Around 1:04 p.m., a TPWD game warden arrived at the location, soon after which two McLennan County Sheriff’s deputies and various members of the volunteer fire department joined them. The rescuers tried to pull the man out through the back window, however, they found that the space was insufficient for extraction.
The Sheriff’s Office says officers ultimately broke the driver’s side window and successfully removed the individual just 15 seconds before the vehicle became fully submerged and was swept further into the creek by the rising waters.
The man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for medical evaluation, and is reported to have sustained no major injuries.
The Sheriff’s Department warmly expresses its gratitude to every participating agency for their collaborative and brave actions during this perilous incident.
